Well, I gave a talk in sacrament meeting today, and if you want to read it, here it is:

Introduction: Hi, I wanted to give a little introduction for
those that don't know me, my name is Christina Stevulak, we've been in the ward
for four years, my husbands name is Matt, and is rarely here because he's a
pilot for American Eagle, we have three children, Quinn is 7, Ava is 6, and
Ethan is 3. We spend most of the summer
in Denver and Seattle
where it's much cooler, but apparently Brother Giberson wanted me to experience
some of the Texas heat, so we are
making a pit stop in Dallas today
so I can give this talk, and I really hope you get something out of it.

I was asked to speak on how the temple blesses my life and
my family. A lot of my talk came from
"Eternity Lies Before Us" by James E. Faust. In it he says:

President Young made
this great proclamation before the Saints even had a roof over their heads and
while they were still living in wagons or sleeping on the ground. He drove his
cane into the ground and said, “Here we will build the <span style="color: #2f393a; font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode";">Temple<span style="color: #2f393a; font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode";"> of our God."

What a declaration of the importance of temples. <st1:date day="2" month="2" year="2002">February
2, 2002</st1:date>, three weeks before I was to marry Matt, I was able to take
out my endowments. I was the first
person in my family to go through the temple.
On my wedding day, my family lovingly waited outside the temple for
me. I know this was especially hard for
my dad, he not being a member of the church, but he still did it without any
complaint. For years afterward anytime
this was talked about in my mother in laws presence she would begin to cry, as
she remembered my dad's willingness to support me and my choice to be married
in the temple, where he could not attend.

President Faust says:

<span style="color: #2f393a; font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode";">Part
of the process of reaching into the eternities comes when we must deal with the
experience called death. This life is hollow without a belief in and an
understanding of immortality. Said Paul, “If in this life only we have hope <span style="font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode";">in Christ,

the Savior are the grand keys that open the locks of immortality. The greatest
fulfillment of these blessings, if we are worthy, comes to us in the holy
temples of God. Within their sacred walls, those who hold the power and
authority bind in heaven that which is bound in earth. This authority has been
delegated by the President of the Church, who holds and exercises all of the
keys of the <span style="color: #2f393a; font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode";">kingdom<span style="color: #2f393a; font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode";"> of <span style="color: #2f393a; font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode";">God<span style="color: #2f393a; font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode";"> on earth.

Six years later my dad was killed in a car accident. This was devastating to all of us, and my
heart broke especially for my step mom who grew up with no religious
background. The day my dad died I knew
what I would be doing one year from that day, and on September 16, 2009,
exactly one year later, Matt and I, along with my mother and father in law
walked into the Seattle temple to do my dad's work. The same temple my dad had
waited outside of 7 years earlier while
Matt and I were married. We did the
baptism all the way through the endowment that day. It was one of the best days of my life. I felt my dad near, and I knew he was happy
with what we were doing for him.
Finally, I was in the temple with my dad.

Two years later my mom and I met in Seattle
to visit my younger sister and her kids.
My mom had been a member of the church since she was fifteen, but she
had never been through the temple. While
there she suggested that we go do baptisms for the dead at the Seattle
temple. The night before we were to go
to the temple she announced that we would not be going to do baptisms, but that
she would be taking out her endowments.
I couldn't believe it! Both my
parents endowed members. It was a dream
come true.

<span style="color: #2f393a; font-family: "Lucida Sans Unicode";">As
the pioneers had the larger vision in their daily challenge for survival, so
also we need to have a greater vision and understanding of our eternal destiny.
Our challenges are more subtle but equally hard. Maintaining our spiritual
strength is also a daily challenge. The greatest source of that spiritual strength
comes, as it did in their time, from our temples.

We are very blessed to have a temple so close. I will be the first to admit that it's not
always easy to get to the temple. Life
gets hectic with work and kids, and life in general, but I also know that as we
make temple attendance a habit our life will have greater spiritual strength to
deal with the daily challenges of life.
When ever I start to lag in my temple attendance I think of my sister in
law who lives in Rosamond, CA,
two hours from the L.A.
temple. She has four little ones, yet
she makes it to the temple every week.
She isn't any different then any of us, she has just made a commitment
to herself and her family, and she is sticking to it. Our stake has asked us to set a personal goal
of temple attendance, and I know that if we stick to it, our spiritual strength
will increase abundantly.

It wasn't worth being off after meltdown after meltdown, it slowly accured to me that the right answer was to go back on. I had to get pretty low though before I realized it. I'm doing much better now, and can handle life a lot better. I guess that's the right answer for me right now. As much as I wanted to be off it, it's definitley not the right time. I do hope to have another baby and I don't want to be on the anti-depressant while I'm pregnant, but I guess I will cross that bridge when I come to it. In other news Ethan decided he wanted to try to fly and leaped off the couch intending to land on the recliner, missed landed on the ground and broke his clavical. He has to wear a brace for a few weeks, but after that should be fine. The doctor said the clavical heals up pretty easily, so that's good. Ethan's barely three years old and this is the second bone he's broken. (He broke his leg after climbing out of his high chair when he was nine months old, check it out here.) Thankfully he's such a sweet and easy going kid, he runs around like he's perfectly fine, trying to wrestle with his brother. Nothing slows that kid down!
My headaches and dizzy spells are slowly subsiding. I think Matt's tired of hearing about it, but like usual, he's supportive, and still loves me, which I will be eternally grateful for. The other big stress in our life is American Airlines filing for bankruptcy. He still has a job, but they have blocked all overtime, which is basically how we survive. To say my husbands been a little stressed out, is putting it lightly, but he's a trooper, and tries to have high spirits. I am applying for a nanny job that's only two days a week and I can bring my kids with me, though two of them will be in school during that time. When I spoke to the lady that I will be nannying for she told me her husband works for American too. It really is a small world, though American probably employs have of the DFW metroplex! (That's Dallas/Fort Worth for you non-Texans). Speaking of Texans, I was made fun of yesterday for pronouncing Greenville like it's spelled, instead of Green-voll. Me and my proper english, oh well, I got them back when I told them I was from Seattle they said, oh you mean Warshington, I said no, there is no r in Washington. This reminded me of my Aunt Evy, who was born in Washington, but still pronounces it with an r. Crazy people!Christinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02555617117568484014noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8548593647097929921.post-15339064550913631092012-04-15T21:55:00.001-05:002012-04-15T21:55:23.840-05:00To Vent....Well it's been a while since I've updated my blog. I think I just needed a break, but now I'm feeling like I need an outlet again. So sorry if this post is mostly venting. It's kinda been a rough few weeks for us. A little over two weeks ago we found out we were pregnant. It was a big surprise to us, though always welcome. Then about five days later I started cramping and spotting. I went into the doctor and they confirmed I was having a miscarriage. They actually said it's what's called a chemical pregnancy, where an egg was fertilized, but didn't do anything after that. It was hard and emotional, but was a little easier, I think, because we hadn't known very long, and also I had a strong feeling something wasn't right from the moment I started suspecting I was pregnant. It was also easier this time around because I had my three little ones I could hug and kiss, and be thankful for, they really comforted me. The other part of it that has been even more challenging is going off my anti-depressant. The second I found out I was pregnant I stopped taking it. I had already weaned myself down to very little, but that last little bit has proven to be very challenging. I started taking it three years ago after I had Ethan and suffered post partum depression. I think it's been so challenging because I 've been on it for so long. Emotionally I feel good, but physically it's been really rough. At first I had such severe dizzy spells, where my heart was racing, and I felt nauseated, I had to lay down for two days straight. Thankfully Matt was home to help or I don't know what I would have done. Actually, I know exactly what I would have done, I would have had to call someone else for help, because I couldn't stand up, I couldn't drive to pick up my kids, or anything else. Then after two days I started having longer and longer stretches of time where I could stand up. It's been about three weeks now and my dizzy spells are finally starting to go away. I still have moments where my eyes feel dizzy, if that makes any sense, but that's way better then my whole head feeling dizzy. It's scary to realize how addicted my body was to those pills. I'm so glad I'm finally off them, and am feeling so well emotionally. Though, I do know that taking those pills three years ago was the right answer for me. That was a very scary time. But now the guilt is setting in. I feel like I've been neglecting my kids needs over the last few weeks, and only doing the bare minimum. I feel extra tired and grumpy, and I don't have the patience that I usally do with them. I know my body is still trying to get back to normal, but I hate feeling this way. I just want to have all the patience in the world for my kids (and hubby). I love them so much, they are my world. Maybe that means I should go to bed now in hopes that I won't be so tired tomorrow, and can be a better Mama. Thanks for listening, whoevers reading this, I love you.... I'm trying my hand at refinishing random items, and making headbands. So here's my first go 'round.

My step mom gave me this old mirror and matching shelf. I instantly saw lots of potential.

Step 1- Primed it (my step dad would not be happy if I had forgotten this step).

Stage 2- Painted it Calypso Sky blue.

Finished it off with a light whitewash. I am very happy with the outcome. Now I just have to find something small, pretty, and unbreakable to go on the shelf.

Here is my first try at a fabric flower head band. On Saturday we drove out to San Francisco (my favorite city). (This is the hill that our reverse went out in the Suburban, more explanation below).

We had to make a stop at Ghiradelli Square for some chocolate. Kristy got me addicted to the 60% Cacoa, with carmel inside. It's so good, and is probably the main reason I put a few pounds on during our trip.

Down at Fisherman's Warf, Quinn and Ava decided to befriend a gargoyle. Ava was more willing to befriend him then Quinn.

I also became addicted to Settlers of Catan while in Sacramento. I love that game, even though I have yet to win. This picture was taken at about one in the morning!

We went to In 'n Out three out of the five days we were there. Ethan loved it. (Probably also attributed to my gainage!)

Matt and I celebrated our eight years of marriage while there. Matt got me a night guard to celebrate, to keep me from grinding my teeth at night. He's so romantical! This is our friend Jeff Routsong. He and Matt have been best friends since high school. He just started a dental practice in Rocklin California. Look him up if you live near by, he's a great dentist!

Kristy borrowed her parents 1992 Suburban while we were there. It was a lot of fun because we were able to all ride together. While we were in San Francisco the reverse decided to stop working. So this picture is of us sitting on the side of the street waiting for Jeff. (Ava's not very happy about it). Does life ever get really overwhelming for you? Well it definitely does for me, and that's what the last couple of months have been like. I had to do a post today, because...

Ethan is 1 today!!!

I can't believe it's been a whole year since this sweet little boy joined our family. He is the sweetest little baby. He definitely broke the mold though. He only weighs 17lbs. 7oz., he is shy, but almost always has a smile on his face. He also prefers his daddy over his mommy (most of the time), which makes me happy, because the other two always preferred me at this age, and it's fun to see him cling to his daddy (Ethan definitely has his daddy right where he wants him!)

Ethan had tubes put in his ears last Monday. Hopefully this will stop the ear infections. We are three for three now with the ear tubes. Our poor kids, but I know it definitely could be worse.

I'm so thankful for my beautiful children, and wonderful, amazing, perfect husband. I love them so much, and am blessed beyond measure.
Christinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02555617117568484014noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8548593647097929921.post-34797976743309988252009-11-26T21:44:00.000-06:002009-11-26T22:06:55.837-06:00Thanksgiving in the ER... That's right, I had to take our first trip to the emergency room for one of our kids. Last week my little Ethan fell out of his high chair (my fault), we didn't notice he wasn't putting any weight on his right leg until the next day. Once we noticed we rushed him to his pediatricians office. They gave us an order for an x-ray, but told us to wait a few days before we do it because he will probably just start using it again in a couple days. Yesterday morning he still wasn't putting any weight on his right leg, so I said "That's It!, I'm taking him in for an x-ray". So after sitting in the waiting room for a half hour, they came and told me his tibia is broken, and I need to take him straight to the emergency room. So off to the emergency room we go, by the way, the whole time Ethan was smiling and giggling. They put a splint on his leg and sent us home. As soon as I put him down, he started crawling and his splint fell right off. Matt and I kept putting it back on, and it kept falling right back off. I was so frustrated, and so stressed out. So I called my pediatrician and she suggested that I take him to Children's hospital, because they know how to better treat children. So as soon as Ethan woke up this morning I drove him to Children's hospital. They did some more x-ray's and then put a soft cast on his leg. He crawled around on it all day and it didn't come off once. I am so much happier, but Ethan is not. He hates the cast because it is limiting his mobility, which is the point! They said it should be healed in about four weeks, but we do have to follow up with an orthopedic surgeon next week, so we will see what he has to say. On this Thanksgiving day, I am extremely thankful for a sweet, lovable, and happy little baby, who has crawled around on a broken leg for over a week, just smiling away as if nothings wrong, and who was giggling while they were putting a splint on his broken leg.

Here he is just playing with some toys, wearing his cute little hospital gown.

Christinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02555617117568484014noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8548593647097929921.post-85973017106609797242009-11-01T21:14:00.001-06:002009-11-01T21:33:59.395-06:00Trick or Treat
Doesn't he look like the Cowardly Lion? I feel so busy all the time, that when I have two seconds to sit down, I just end up veggin' on the couch because I'm so tired, and my little Ethan (or E-fey as we like to call him) has been neglected the most, at least on the blog, in real life he leads a pretty pampered life. It's because of all the smiles he gives. He is the happiest, smiliest (is that a word), most active little boy I've ever seen. He started doing the army crawl just before he turned six months, he is now seven and a half months and he still does a kind of modified army crawl, but it doesn't slow him down one bit, he is lightning quick (trying to keep up with his brother and sister). Quinn and Ava didn't crawl until 8 to 10 months, and baby proofing is way harder now because Quinn and Ava have so many little toys for him to choke on. We have had to add a new rule that Quinn and Ava have to keep their toys in their room, but now that they are always playing in their room, guess who is constantly trying to get in there? That's right, E-fey!!! So now they have to keep their bedroom, and bathroom door shut as well. He just wants to go and play in there so bad, he loves to play with Ava's kitchen (maybe he will be a cook!). Ethan has actually been a first for me in a lot of ways. He is the smallest baby I have ever had. At his six month appointment he weighed 14 lbs. and was 25 inches long. Ava was a good 4 lbs bigger at six months. I have also never had a baby that has rolled over before he could crawl. Ethan has been rolling over since he was about 4 months (maybe even earlier, I can't remember). And, he's a quiet baby, but still very smiley, and oh so adorable, but he does do something that all of my children have done, love their mommy, and when I say love, I mean I'm pretty much their favorite person in the whole world. Daddy becomes the favorite later on when they get to be Quinn's and Ava's age.

This is Ethan right before we fed him solids for the first time. Oh man he's a cutie pie.

and this is him after he got his first taste, do you think he liked it? Yeah, me neither.

Where'd Ethan go? Oh, he rolled right under the bed, and I couldn't find him for a minute and it scared me to death!
I just had to add this picture because I think it's so funny. This was in July when we were doing some tubing up in Seattle. I can't wait to show Ethan this picture when he gets older, I'm sure he's going to think the neon purple, and hot pink life jacket is SWEET!

Oh, how I love those cute, little dimples, and big, beautiful, brown eyes. Sorry, I can't help braggin' about my little E-fey, E-fey! (Ethan, I hope this makes up for neglecting you on the blog! I love you).

Christinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02555617117568484014noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8548593647097929921.post-29552853681861276562009-09-17T22:03:00.001-05:002009-09-17T22:37:04.115-05:00First Day of School and some other funny stuff

Quinn's first day of school. He was so excited to go. He loves his teacher Ms. Georgie, and he has already made new friends. Every morning he gets up and asks me if it's time to go to school, and when I tell him he's not going that day, he gets so sad. I can't believe I have a little boy that is old enough to go to school. He is growing up way to fast!

Here he is with his teacher Ms. Georgie (I have know idea what he's doing with his face).

Uh, we'll just call this one Paint Fight. Quinn got a Crayola Cyclone for his birthday. It's suppose to paint cyclones on the pavement. Well, one day Quinn and Ava were outside playing with it and I guess they decided to start pouring paint all over each other, because this is what I found when I went outside. Silly kids.

So tonight I was sitting on the couch feeding Ethan and I looked over at Ava and this is what I saw. Matt and I were laughing so hard. She just looked at me and said her baby was hungry. I told her she was a very good mom. Right before this happened I went to sit down on the couch and her baby was laying right in my way. I didn't think much of it as I tossed her baby to the floor, but Ava instantly started yelling at me, "You through my baby on the floor!?!", I was trying not to laugh as I apologized to her and handed her the baby. It was SO funny, she yelled at me exactly how I would of yelled at her if she had thrown Ethan on the floor. She's so protective, I have to be so careful and always remember to treat her baby with complete love, and respect. I would like to think this has something to do with the great example I have been to her as a mother, but I guess we will have to wait and see on that one.

Christinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02555617117568484014noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8548593647097929921.post-39546327884075101732009-09-16T09:51:00.000-05:002009-09-16T10:01:14.473-05:00Two Years ago today... Miss you Dad, and love you, can't wait to see you again.

Christinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02555617117568484014noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8548593647097929921.post-13211669224558243742009-08-21T22:57:00.001-05:002009-08-22T00:24:18.838-05:00VentingI must be mad because I'm blogging again, and I don't have two seconds to spare these days. Matt and I discovered that Quinn has a yeast overgrowth in his stomach and intestines. It stems back to his ear infection days when he was constantly on antibiotics. The antibiotics kill the bad AND good bacteria, which allows the yeast to start growing out of control because there's no good bacteria to keep it under control. If you google ear infections and yeast, you will come across a plethora of articles that link yeast from Autism to Fibromyalgia. One I thought was especially informative was this one by Dr. Crook: http://www.latitudes.org/articles/hy_yeast.html

I'm mad, I don't understand why this is happening, especially when it's so preventable, and EASILY treated. Antibiotics save lives everyday, I'm grateful we have them, but why can't they prescribe an anti fungal medication and some probiotics along with it to counteract all the good bacteria being killed.

I'm sad, because my little Quinnie has been suffering with this since before he was one, thus resulting in constant rashes, behavior problems, delays in learning, increasing food allergies, and lots more. I feel like I did this to my child because I blindly do what the doctor tells me too, with out finding out for myself what I should do. I can't do that anymore. I need to wake up and take more of a proactive approach to my families health care, including vaccinations, because unfortunately doctors just treat the symptoms and don't try to find the real problem. I think doctors just learn how to treat symptoms in medical school, and now they come up with names for a bunch of symptoms even if they don't know what the cause is, like leaky gut syndrome, or IBS.

A couple of indications that Quinn had this problem was when his hair was wet it smelled like a wet dog, which is the yeast coming out of his hair. We did a home test that we found on the Internet. When you first wake up in the morning, before you eat, drink, or brush your teeth, you spit into a glass of water. If yeast is present it will look like strings are hanging down from the spit, or the water will turn foggy, or the spit will sink to the bottom of the glass. Normal spit just floats on top. We did the test twice for Quinn and both times it looked like strings hanging down from it, almost instantly.

I am so grateful that I found out about this now, and that it is so easy to help Quinn (if you call taking a 5 year old off sugar five days before his birthday easy), but I'm still very grateful that I can help him. I'm so grateful for a Heavenly Father that is watching over our family.

Thanks for listening.Christinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02555617117568484014noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8548593647097929921.post-72981615185623334182009-08-10T19:59:00.000-05:002009-08-10T20:33:02.656-05:00Quinn Singing O Mio Babbino CaroChristinahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02555617117568484014noreply@blogger.com6
